Borna Barisic’s agent claims he could leave Rangers this summer

Borna Barisic’s agent has suggested that Rangers will not be able to keep hold of the left-back beyond this summer despite the Croatian recently signing a new contract with the Gers, in comments reported by the Daily Record.

Barisic has been a revelation this season. Rangers fans would have been forgiven for expecting the defender to leave after one campaign at Ibrox.

His initial form quickly deserted him. And he ultimately struggled to push ahead of Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan, neither of whom are natural left-backs.

But Barisic’s turnaround has been remarkable. He has often been the Gers’ best player, and has undoubtedly become a real fan favourite.

His attitude on the pitch has been exemplary. And he has backed that up by scoring a couple of goals and creating a large number for his teammates.

As reported by the Record, he signed a new long-term contract in January. However, his agent has suggested that he is still likely to be on the move this summer.

“Rangers won’t be able to keep Borna after the season he’s had, even though he’s just signed a new contract,” Ives Cakarun said, as reported by the Record. “Borna’s priority right now is Rangers, who have made significant progress this season under the management of Steven Gerrard.

“There was interest in him during the winter transfer window – the strongest came from Napoli, but Rangers turned down all offers because they wanted to keep one of their best players.

“They value Borna a lot and wanted to win something with him because Rangers haven’t won a trophy for a long time.

“But after the season is over and given the demand for Borna, Rangers are sure to start considering new offers. It will be a completely new position for Borna.”

TBR View – Rangers still hold strong position

It would be a huge blow for Rangers to lose Barisic. But the Gers appear to be in a strong position, regardless of what his agent may say.

Barisic has another four years left on his contract. So, unless there is some sort of release clause, Rangers can surely demand a significant fee for him.

And it is important to note that the comments are not coming from the player himself. If he was happy to sign a new deal in January, he will surely be ready to stay where he is if Rangers’s asking price is not met in the coming months.
