Borja Iglesias rejection shows how far Everton have fallen

Reports from Spanish newspaper SPORT suggest that RCD Espanyol forward Borja Iglesias has turned down a potential move to Everton, despite being offered four times his current wages to move to Merseyside.

The striker has scored just once in his last seven La Liga games, failing to keep up his impressive form at the start of the season, as his team have dropped down the table with just one win in their last nine games.

Still though, the 26-year-old opted to reject a move to Goodison Park, showing just how far the Toffees have fallen in terms of status in recent years, with Iglesias content with midtable Espanyol.

With the goals having dried up for Richarlison and no-one else to rely on, Marco Silva will be left hunting for an alternative as the January transfer window enters its final week of action.

Given that the reports state that Iglesias’ £24.7 million (€28 million) release clause would have been triggered had he taken the deal, there would appear to be some kind of budget available.

Once a side expected to push for Europe at the very least and an attractive proposition for many players from across Europe, Everton can now no longer compete with midtable teams who are offering lower wages.
