Last July, Everton snapped up promising French attacker Boris Mathis from FC Metz. The young forward had impressed during his time with the French side, even featuring for the first-team. He arrived at Finch Farm on a two-year deal after signing professional terms with the Toffees.
His first year at Everton was not overly successful. He struggled to make a breakthrough with the under-23s and was loaned out to Northampton Town in League One in January. That did not pan out either.
After sacking manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, his caretaker replacement culled the loan players at Sixfields in April.

Mathis returned to Everton and finally made something of a breakthrough in the under-23s, featuring twice before the end of the season.
But that has not translated into a better second season. Mathis has not yet been seen in action for the development side in Premier League 2 and it would appear his second year at the club will likely be his last.
There is, of course, still time to turn things around and the recent injury to Fraser Hornby may afford him a chance of sneaking into the action in the weeks to come.
However, it appears this gamble from Everton will not be paying off.
