Tottenham Hotspur have received a boost as they aim to keep Christian Eriksen in North London. According to Spanish media outlet Marca, long-term admirers Real Madrid now have their eyes on other targets.
Eriksen remains on Zinedine Zidane’s radar but he is only a third-choice option if Real Madrid miss out on the top two targets. Two other midfielders are Zidane’s preferred options.
Real Madrid eye Pogba and van de Beek
Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and Ajax star Donny van de Beek are Real Madrid’s top two targets. Zidane will try to sign one of these two and if neither join, he will reignite his interest in Eriksen.
Pogba’s future remains a mystery. His time at Man United has been a combination of highs and lows; mastery contrasted with some abject performances as each week brings something new.
The France international, 26, could be looking for a new challenge as the Red Devils continue to slide away from the top of the league. Real Madrid might be his next project.
Ajax midfielder van de Beek is another option. The 22-year-old caught the eye with some sensational midfield performances as Ajax reached the Champions League semi-finals.
But the Dutch side will struggle to hold onto van de Beek for the long-term. Real Madrid will hope to lure the Netherlands star to the Bernabeu.
What next for Christian Eriksen?
If Real Madrid fail to sign Pogba or van de Beek, Eriksen could seal his dream move to Real Madrid. But if not, he has a major decision to make.
Does the Denmark international stay at Spurs or force a move elsewhere? Manchester United is another option for him (The Mirror). Ironically, Pogba moving to Real Madrid could prompt Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to press ahead with this Eriksen move.
However, while Man United will offer him more money, it is a sideways step at best at the moment. Tottenham, under Mauricio Pochettino, are in a much better position to compete for the Premier League title than Solskjaer’s side.
