Aston Villa went into the summer transfer window looking light on depth in the centre of their defence but in Bjorn Engels and Tyrone Mings, Dean Smith will hope he’s found the answer.
Engels has been speaking to Villa’s official website and admits he needs time to get to the same level as his central defensive partner, who he clearly rates highly.
He said: “He is a big leader, he speaks a lot with me on and off the pitch. It’s nice to play alongside him. He’s played a few years in the Premier League already so to reach his level, I need to improve more, to play more games.
“He thinks so fast, he is very fast, very good in the air. We have some of the same qualities.”
TBR’s View – Villa need a result to take pressure off the new-boys
Building a central defensive partnership does take time but that can be a precious comodity in the Premier League if the results aren’t coming.
Five goals conceded in two games is a record that must improve if Engels and Mings are to be given the time to play alongside each other and continuing to develop their understanding.
There’s no need for panic – and the pair have the makings of a solid duo – but a result sooner rather than later would ease some of the pressure which grows very rapidly in the Premier League, especially in the new faces battling to settle in.
