According to reliable journalist Alan Nixon, Birmingham City are interested in signing Ben Marshall from Norwich City.

Marshall has featured sparingly for high-flying Norwich and is a loan target for Garry Monk.

Birmingham could benefit from having the much-travelled winger at St Andrew’s but Aston Villa should consider entering the race.

Marshall is perfect for what Aston Villa need and his addition on loan would help them comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

The 27-year-old has vast knowledge of the Championship and that could work to Aston Villa’s advantage.

Marshall has made over 300 appearances already in his career and most of those have been in the second tier.

The other reason that the former England under-21 international would be a good signing for the Villans is his versatility.

Marshall operates on either flank, as a central midfielder, in the number 10 role or as a full-back.

Considering Aston Villa need depth in all departments, Marshall fits the bill as a utility man.

Marshall has struggled for game time at Carrow Road this season, featuring just six times.

But he has previously starred for the likes of Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers, Wolves and Millwall in the Championship.

The former Manchester United schoolboy might not be an immediate starter but he would be an ideal back-up on a half-season loan.
