When Steve Bruce brought in Icelandic midfielder Birkir Bjarnason from FC Basel in January 2017 it was a move that had fans at Villa Park excited. Memories of his Euro 2016 heroics with Iceland were still fresh in the memory and, as reported by the Daily Star, he only cost around £1.7 million. ‘Thor’, as he is known due to his long blonde hair, was the perfect midfield operator to help Aston Villa forward.
However, just over two years on, it seems as though his Aston Villa career could be coming to an end.
Bjarnason has never found a consistent level of form for the Midlands club. That patchy form means he has never truly won over the fans at Villa Park.
Now the Icelander has not featured in the last four games for Dean Smith’s side and considering he turns 31 in the summer it would be no surprise to see the Aston Villa boss decide to move him on.
If that did turn out to be the case he would undoubtedly leave with the best wishes of the Aston Villa fanbase. But his career at the club has been one that always threatened to ignite, but never truly took off.
