Birkir Bjarnason fortunate to have Aston Villa starting role

Aston Villa’s winless run in the Championship continued on Saturday with a 2-2 draw at home to Hull City, but they did at least come from two goals behind to earn a point.

The Midlands giants are down to 13th in the table as a result and haven’t won in four league matches now.

There were some below per performances on show against Hull and it’s left manager Dean Smith with some thinking ahead of the next game at home to Ipswich next weekend.

One man that should be treading very carefully is midfielder Birkir Bjarnason, who should be axed from the starting XI after a lousy display.

The 30-year-old has started the last three consecutive league games for Villa and unfortunately he’s massively out of form right now.

Bjarnason was part of a midfield three against Hull and wasn’t quite at the races before he was substituted off in the 75th minute.

The Iceland international did little to provide much defensive cover in front of the back and lost individual duals, something he would normally pride himself on.

He also was slack with his passing and offered very little attacking threat when he broke forward.

Villa are struggling without injured talisman Jack Grealish to provide a spark from midfield and Bjarnason is not someone who can fill his void.

Smith could consider a formation change away from a 4-3-3 to leave out a struggling Bjarnason, while supporters would surely love to see Callum O’Hare get an opportunity.
