Everton’s under-23s were knocked out of the EFL Trophy last night after being crushed by League One side Fleetwood Town. The experienced Cod Army proved too strong for Everton’s impressive youngsters and rightly ran out comfortable winners.
For one Fleetwood player, he could have easily been on the opposite team.
In the summer, Everton made a move to sign England youth international goalkeeper Billy Crellin from the League One side.
As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Everton made a £200,000 bid for the player in July which was rejected by Joey Barton’s side.

Everton clearly ended their interest there in the player, who was part of England under-17s World Cup win back in 2017.
At the time, Crellin might have been disappointed not to have been given the chance to speak to Everton.
However, it now looks like the right move for his career.
Crellin signed a new deal at Fleetwood in October and spent time out on loan with Chorley FC at the start of the new season. However, he is now back at Highbury and made his League One debut for the club last weekend.
It appears he is ready to battle experienced duo Alex Cairns and Matthew Gilks for the first-team spot at Fleetwood which, arguably, will be better for his development than playing under-23 football at Finch Farm.
Hopefully, he can go on to be the star many at Fleetwood are predicting he is capable of becoming.
