'Biggest thing I did': Steve Bruce claims he stopped Tottenham signing £100m player

Former Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce says he stopped Tottenham Hotspur signing Jack Grealish for £10 million.

In an interview with the Telegraph, Bruce was asked to sum up each of his managerial spells, and of course that included his time at Villa Park.

Bruce says he fought as hard as he could to prevent the club selling Grealish for a tenth of the £100 million he ended up joining Manchester City for last summer.

Back in 2018, Bruce told TalkSPORT that if Spurs had got their act together before Villa were taken over, they could have signed Grealish.

Bruce says he stopped Villa selling Grealish to Tottenham

Speaking about his Villa reign to the Telegraph, he said: “Great club with a great history, but the reason I got it was they were in a bit of a mess in the Championship.

“They had won four games out of the last 54 or something. When we won away at Reading, you would have thought we’d won the European Cup, the fans hadn’t seen an away win in so long. First season we kept them up, second season we lost in the play-off final to Fulham.

“We didn’t play at all well. Kevin Friend, who is retiring this summer, saw Ryan Fredericks stamp on Jack Grealish after 20 minutes and it should have had a red card. We would have won and it was a huge disappointment. Then, again, there was another takeover, which the club badly needed.

“But the biggest thing I did that summer was fight tooth and nail to keep Grealish because they wanted to sell him and Spurs were there with £10million. They got £100m for him last summer! Great new owners there, even though they sacked me.”

Grealish would have been an outstanding signing for Spurs, given the way his career trajectory has gone since his brush with north London.

He did struggle slightly at times last season, but it would be a surprise if he did not make a success of his record move to City.

And Grealish will also hope to be a key part of the England squad, led by Spurs talisman Harry Kane, who go in pursuit of World Cup glory later this year.
