Ally McCoist has admitted he was shocked by Arsenal’s defending against Luton Town tonight.

McCoist was covering the game for Amazon Prime Video and was unimpressed with Arsenal’s defensive work, despite picking up a 4-3 win.

The Gunners turned up to Kenilworth Road as heavy favourites on Tuesday evening as they sit top of the Premier League table.

Luton have out in some promising performances of later, particularly at home, and they proved to be anything but easy opponents. Rob Edwards’ men got off to a brilliant start to the game but found themselves 2-1 down heading into halftime after goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus.

Yet, Luton continued to threaten on the counter and from set-piece situations after Gabriel Osho’s headed goal in the first half.

The Hatters found themselves with a 3-2 advantage in the 57th minute after goals from Elijah Adebayo and Ross Barkley.

And shortly after Kai Havertz levelled things up on the hour mark, McCoist admitted Arsenal’s defending shocked him tonight.

Speaking on Prime Video’s coverage of the game, McCoist said he was surprised to see Arsenal ship three goals against Luton.

“I mean, he’ll [Arteta] be sitting there thinking he’d have settled beforehand scoring three goals and he’d expect to win the game,” he said. “Considering their away defensive record, so that’s the biggest surprise, for sure.”

Of course, Arsenal went on to pick up all three points thanks to a last-minute header from Declan Rice. But it’s fair to say their performance was far from convincing.

Many expected them to have too much for Luton on the night but they conceded three avoidable goals.

Indeed, David Raya will undoubtedly receive plenty of criticism over Adebayo and Barkley’s efforts.

The Gunners looked vulnerable from set-pieces on the night after heading into the game with the best defensive record in the Premier League.

Nevertheless, Arteta’s men continue to pick up positive results while not being at their best and that’s usually a sign of a title-challenging side.
