Amadou Onana has been speaking on Everton’s official YouTube channel and has shared what Roberto Martinez told him about the club before he joined.

Onana has got off to a really promising start to his Everton career, putting in some commanding displays in midfield.

The 21-year-old made the switch from Lille over the summer but has seemingly adjusted to Premier League football with ease.

It was a huge coup for Everton to bring the talented midfielder to Merseyside after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. Now, Onana has admitted that Martinez played a role in persuading him.

Onana shares what Martinez told him

Martinez enjoyed a brilliant spell at Goodison Park after overachieving with Wigan Athletic before making the switch in 2013.

The Spaniard led Everton to a fifth-place finish in his first season, recording their record points tally of 72 in the Premier League era.

He nearly led the Toffees into the Champions League that season, but fell short at the final hurdle. The now Belgium boss was sacked just two seasons later but was full of praise for his former side while talking to Onana.

The midfielder spoke to Everton’s Supporters’ Clubs and shared what Martinez told him before he completed a switch to Goodison Park.

“I did [speak to Martinez]. He’s the Everton man and he’s had a great time here,” he said.

“He said a lot of great things about the club, the history, the fans and the atmosphere.

“That played a big role. He just told me go there and you will enjoy yourself.”

Martinez manages Onana at international level and has handed the talented midfielder two caps for the Red Devils.

But it wasn’t just Martinez that helped convince Onana to join Lampard’s men this season. Fellow Belgium international and former Blues striker Romelu Lukaku also played his part.

Onana added: “He [Lukaku] said the same about Everton – he did have a great time here and scored a lot of goals. He gave me the same advice as Roberto.”

It’s great to hear that both Martinez and Lukaku still talk about Everton on such glowing terms. The pair enjoyed successful spells at Goodison Park and clearly gave Onana great insight into life on Merseyside.

Lampard will be delighted to have a player like Onana at the club. The youngster looks set to be a mainstay in the Toffees midfield for years to come.
