'Big game': Paul Merson predicts the result of Leeds United vs Aston Villa this weekend

Paul Merson has now predicted the result of the ‘big game’ Leeds United vs Aston Villa this weekend on Sportskeeda

Villa picked up a much-needed win against Southampton last time out after a poor run of form in the Premier League.

Steven Gerrard has come under scrutiny after some poor displays but will be hoping his side have now turned a corner.

Leeds have not played since the beginning of September as their fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Manchester United were postponed.

Jesse Marsch’s side got off to a really encouraging start to the season, putting in an eye-catching display in their 3-0 win over Chelsea last month. But the Whites’ form has dipped and Marsch has lost two of his last three games in the league.

Merson believes neither side have played ‘particularly well’ this season. And he has now predicted the sides to share the points at Elland Road on Sunday.

Merson predicts Leeds vs Villa

“Leeds are a bit dull at the moment, and this is a big game for them,” Merson told Sportskeeda

“If they lose this game, their good start goes out the window. Neither team has played particularly well so far this season.

“Aston Villa pulled off a big result against Southampton but if they lose here, they’re back to square one. Their victory against Southampton was important, but the game was dire.

“If Steven Gerrard had lost that game, serious questions would’ve been asked. They did win, however, and fair play to them. They’ll have to go and grind one out again this weekend.”

Gerrard will be desperate to pick up a result at Elland Road this weekend but will face a tough task in doing so. Leeds have won two out of three games at home this season and were unlucky to draw against Everton.

Marsch will be hoping his side can turn their form around after a heavy 5-2 defeat to Brentford last time out.

There’s some history between the sides too, with their memorable battle at Elland Road in 2019 producing one of the most bizarre moments in football history.

Leeds and Villa fans will remember the moment too well, when Robin Koch scored while Villains striker Jonathan Kodjia was down injured. The game descended into chaos and Anwar El Ghazi was sent off, before Leeds begrudgingly allowed Albert Adomah to score.

Despite the rivalry between the two sides, Merson is right by saying that neither team can really afford to lose the game. Gerrard will be eager to build on a positive result last time out, while Marsch will be desperate for his side to get back to winning ways.
