Marcelo Bielsa felt the need to defend the goalscoring form of playmaker Samu Saiz this week.
The Spaniard is yet to find the back of the net in the league so far this season, with his only strike coming in the EFL Cup.
That is a far cry from last season’s performances; but Bielsa was at pains to point out the great work Saiz does in terms of his side’s build-up play.
There is a huge element of truth in that, and obviously Saiz will love to hear his manager defending his performances so passionately.
However, there can be no hiding from the fact that Bielsa does need Saiz to contribute in front of goal. With Patrick Bamford out long-term and Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe also sidelines lately, the Argentine needs goalscorers.
Saiz is showing his quality once more this season, but he needs to help Leeds be more efficient in front of goal.
The Whites will make the chances over the course of the campaign; they just need to make sure they have enough players across the pitch who can take them.
It can’t all fall on Roofe and Tyler Roberts. Saiz can help ease the burden.
