Bielsa should unleash 'first-class' Leeds gem v Arsenal, he's like Messi - TBR View
Leeds United may have been struggling in the Premier League this season, but they’ve got a great opportunity to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals tonight.
Marcelo Bielsa’s charges will be heading to Arsenal on the back of a 1-1 Premier League draw against Wolves last time out.
Leeds put three unanswered goals past Crewe in the Carabao Cup second round before overcoming Fulham on penalties in the third.
On Friday, Mark Jackson’s Under-23s were without several key players as they played out a 1-1 Premier League draw with Brighton.
Joe Gelhardt was one of those, and he played a big role the following day, coming off the bench to win the penalty that led to Leeds’ equaliser.
Bielsa now has the perfect opportunity to unleash the talented 19-year-old from the off against the Gunners.
Gelhardt has been in and around the first team this season, and already has three senior appearances to his name.
In addition, the Thorp Arch gem’s U23s tally has been nothing short of sensational.
He has made 24 appearances for the U23s, registering 17 goals and four assists.
Leeds gem “absolutely first-class”
Martin Keown was amazed by Gelhardt’s efforts against Wolves and compared him to none other than Lionel Messi.
“Breath of fresh air when he came on,” he told Match of the Day when discussing Gelhardt.
“Running with the ball. It was a difficult afternoon for Leeds. Wolves just sat back.
“He completely changed the game. I think that sometimes young players can do this in their performance.
“It was his willingness to run at the opponents. Absolutely first-class.
“Look at this [the run to win the penalty], does that remind you of Messi?”
Given Arsenal are likely to ring the changes tonight, Gelhardt really has a great opportunity to give their back line a torrid time.
