As we enter December, Championship clubs are now pruning their lists of transfer targets for the January transfer window.
Both Leeds United and Aston Villa have promotion to the Premier League in their sights, with the Villans now resurgent under Dean Smith following the sacking of Steve Bruce.
The promotion rivals are both in need of a goalkeeper; Jamal Blackman’s broken leg means that Bailey Peacock-Farrell needs fresh competition between the sticks, while at Villa Park, Ørjan Nyland is yet to convince that he can be a suitable stopper for a side with designs on the top two.
Premier League strugglers Burnley have assembled a swathe of goalkeepers after Sean Dyche swooped for Joe Hart in the summer, shunting England international Tom Heaton down the pecking order and that represents an opportunity for both clubs.
EFL expert Sam Parkin has selected Elland Road and Villa Park as Heaton’s two likeliest destinations should he be on the move in January, but Marcelo Bielsa has reportedly moved to rule out a swoop for the Clarets outcast.
If that leaves the door open for Villa to swoop for Heaton – and their financial situation by no means makes that guarantee – then Leeds may well have handed a side who are shaping up to be a real promotion rival a major boost.
