'Bid £50m': Some Spurs fans wowed by £21k-a-week striker's latest display

Some Spurs fans have urged their club to move for Ivan Toney next year following his latest impressive Premier League display.

Tottenham bolstered their ranks with some decent signings in the summer, including attacking talent Bryan Gil.

However, Spurs failed to bring in a new centre-forward to compete with, and deputise for, Harry Kane.

Tottenham were actually linked with Toney when he was still at Peterborough, but Brentford signed him in the end.

“Tottenham wanted him as back-up for Harry Kane,” Posh director of football Barry Fry told BBC Sport in May.

“Fulham tried to buy him but they asked to wait until the end of the window [which was extended until October] and we couldn’t wait.

“We needed to replace him and we would have got more for him if the global crisis didn’t happen.”

Brentford paid a mere initial £5million for Toney, an absolute bargain given he helped fire the Bees into the Premier League.

The 25-year-old registered 33 goals and `10 assists in the Championship last season, with two goals coming in the playoffs.

Before the playoff final, Fry speculated that Toney was worth up to £40million.

But his price tag will surely be increasing by the week, considering he not only got his team into the Premier League but is now shining in the top flight.

On Saturday, Brentford ran out 2-0 winners at Wolves, and Toney led the line superbly, scored a penalty and provided an assist for Bryan Mbeumo.

Here is what some Spurs fans said about the £21,000-a-week star’s display:

Ivan Toney: The story so far

Toney came through the ranks at hometown club Northampton, making his debut in November 2012 in an FA Cup meeting with Bradford.

He made 60 competitive appearances for the Cobblers, netting 13 goals and claiming six assists.

In 2015, Toney joined Newcastle, but he made just four senior appearances for them.

The Magpies sent the striker out on numerous loans before eventually moving him on in 2018.

Toney then joined Peterborough, a club known for turning talented prospects into top players and selling them for profit.

This is exactly what happened with Toney, who clocked up an impressive 49 goals and 15 assists from just 94 competitive appearances for Posh.

In 2019-20, Toney scored nine times in his last seven games before the season was abandoned in March 2020 due to covid, and was voted Player of the Season at the EFL Awards.

Peterborough then sold the 5ft 10in marksman to Brentford, another club known for nurturing talent.

Indeed, Toney did so well for the Bees that Premier League clubs were apparently circling in case they didn’t go up.

However, that’s not been the case, and Brentford fans are loving every minute of seeing Toney working his magic in the red and white stripes.
