Leeds United might have been swept away by Manchester United, but supporters wont’ forget the goal score by Luke Ayling anytime soon.

The defender levelled the game up in the 49th minute with a thunderous effort from distance. David De Gea had no chance as Ayling made it 1-1 with an incredible goal.

It is rare to see the defender on the scoresheet. And even though Leeds ended up eventual 5-1 losers on the day, the goal from Ayling will be one that will go down as one of the Yorkshire side’s best of the season.

Indeed, the fullback’s strike was the only positive from the match from Marcelo Bielsa’s side. And Ayling, who earns a reported £8,000-a-week, believes that it was tough game against the Manchester giants.

The 29-year-old said via Leeds’ official website: “We got back into it and scored a goal,. Then I think we were 3-1 down before we even got our breath back.

“It all happened a bit quick, we will go back and see what happened and try to get it right for the next game.”

The day may have ended in defeat. But with it being Leeds’ first game of the season, there are still plenty of games to make up for both lost ground and confidence amongst fans.

And on social media, Ayling’s strike was well praised amongst Leeds supporters, who loved the quality the defender showed against one of the club’s biggest rivals.

Here’s what some fans had to say on Twitter about Ayling…
