‘Better than Guendouzi and Xhaka’, ‘looks elite’: Some Arsenal fans react to links with 18-year-old

A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the BT report claiming the Gunners are after Helsingborgs prodigy Armin Gigovic.

The Swedish club is in “very bad condition” financially and they have to sell the 18-year-old defensive midfielder, according to Swedish journalist Daniel Kristoffersson.

However, Mikel Arteta’s Gunners will reportedly have to compete with Manchester City and clubs in the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and Denmark for Gigovic’s services.

Gigovic is widely considered one of Sweden’s best young players and has already clocked up 14 appearances in the Allsvenskan despite only turning 18 just two months ago.

Primarily a defensive midfielder, the Sweden Under-17 international can also be deployed on the left wing, and he admits he wants more of an attacking role in future (Fotboll Direkt).

In conversation with Danish outlet BT, Kristoffersson said Arsenal and Manchester City are interested in the youngster, as well as a host of other clubs outside England.

However, he also suggested Gigovic shouldn’t take too big a leap at this stage, claiming FC Copenhagen would be a perfect switch for him at this moment in time.

Kristoffersson also claimed Helsingborgs have turned down an offer of SEK 15 million (£1.3million) but are all-but certain to sell due to their financial situation.

“He has interest from Arsenal, Manchester City and from very, very large leagues,” said Kristoffersson.

“There are Italian clubs, Danish clubs, Belgian and Dutch clubs who will buy him. Helsingborgs has been offered a bid of SEK 15 million, but they will not sell him for that amount.

“I think the perfect step for him would be not to take a big step. FC Copenhagen would be the perfect step for him, because you have seen good examples like Ludwig Augustinsson. It was a perfect career choice for him.

“I hope Gigovic will do the same and go to FC Copenhagen before heading to a major league. But maybe he’s making another decision. I think he’ll make his decision within two weeks… Helsingborg is in a very bad condition after the (global health crisis), so they have to sell him.”

While big-money signings are most likely not on the plan of action for Arsenal this summer, little-known gems who could be polished into top players may very well be, and Gigovic certainly looks like a promising player.

But what do Arsenal fans make of the speculation? Below is some of the social media reaction:
