‘Better than Doherty’: Some Spurs fans want to see Under-23s star face Aston Villa

A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have urged Jose Mourinho to start Marcel Lavinier at right-back in Sunday’s Premier League game.

The 20-year-old is enjoying a superb season at Under-23s level and made his first-team debut in the Europa League round of 32 second leg win over Wolfsberger.

Lavinier – who can play across the defence and even in midfield – was released by Chelsea last year and linked up with Spurs in October 2020 after a successful trial.

While in West London, he won the Under-18 Premier League southern division and national title, the FA Youth Cup and the inaugural Under-18 Premier League Cup in 2017-18.

Mourinho currently has Matt Doherty and Serge Aurier at his disposal at right-back, but neither has cemented their spot in the position.

In wake of Thursday’s dismal defeat to Dinamo Zagreb and Europa League elimination, some Spurs fans want to see some of the up-and-coming stars get a chance against Aston Villa.

And Lavinier put in an amazing performance for Tottenham’s U23s, scoring in a 3-0 win over their Manchester United counterparts in the Premier League 2.
