'Better than Botman', 'please god': Some Newcastle fans buzzing after hearing which defender PIF's targeting now

A number of Newcastle United fans have welcomed speculation linking the Magpies with Diego Carlos.

The Telegraph has claimed that the Magpies see the Sevilla defender as a potential Sven Botman alternative.

Carlos is thought to be “highly regarded” at Newcastle and a January bid could now materialise.

The 28-year-old is a left-footed centre-back with a reported £30million price tag.

Carlos is an essential player for his club, clocking up 116 competitive appearances since 2019.

In 2020, a Squawka report described him as one of the most physically imposing centre-backs in European football.

“At 6ft 1in, the Brazilian is average height for a centre-back,” they wrote.

“But he makes up for it with acute positional instincts, athleticism and aggression.”

Newcastle are set to make their first signing of the PIF era this week, with Kieran Trippier coming on board.

However, the Magpies are in a Premier League relegation dogfight and need to bolster their ranks further.

Admittedly, Newcastle will have a real job on their hands trying to sign Carlos.

Sevilla are second in La Liga, just five points off top spot, and are in the Europa League knockouts.

In addition, Carlos’ contract runs until 2024.

Nonetheless, the Magpies are now a financial powerhouse in football, so you never know.

And plenty of Newcastle fans would love to see Carlos arrive at St James’ Park:
