'Better signing than Bruno Guimaraes': Merson says Newcastle already have a truly 'outstanding' player at SJP
Paul Merson has claimed that Dan Burn has been a better signing for Newcastle United than Bruno Guimaraes.
The Magpies had an eventful January transfer window. Eddie Howe brought in five new players – Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett and Chris Wood along with Guimaraes and Burn, and all of them contributed massively.
Guimaraes, however, has been the standout player. The Brazilian has barely put a foot wrong since joining the club from Lyon, and he is arguably the most-loved player at St James’ Park at the moment.
However, Merson believes Burn has been an even better signing than the midfielder and has branded the transfer as a ‘masterstroke’.
Paul Merson says Dan Burn has been a better signing for Newcastle than Bruno Guimaraes
In his column on Sportskeeda, Merson wrote about Burn: “This is a player who has turned it around for Newcastle United since joining the club in January and it could be argued that his arrival coincided with an upturn in fortunes for Eddie Howe and co.
“They paid a fair bit of money to snap up Dan Burn from Brighton, but he’s an absolute giant of a defender and has been as solid as a rock.
“He’s not very natural and elegant, but he does what it says on the box! Burn is an old-school centre-half and his arrival has turned out to be a masterstroke for Newcastle, as he played pretty much every game in the second half of the season to help them comfortably avoid relegation.
“I liked him when he was at Brighton, but he’s been outstanding at Newcastle. Whoever has played next to him at the heart of the defence has looked good, which is a clear indication that he is the leader of their backline.
“He’s already played a big role for Newcastle under the new ownership and has been a better signing than Bruno Guimaraes, for me.”
That is some claim from Merson there.
Guimaraes’ quality in the middle of the park has been immense for Newcastle. He’s arguably a better player than anyone the Magpies have had over the last decade, and the fact that he’s still only 24 means he’ll only get better in the coming years.
Burn hasn’t been a bad signing by any means. The giant defender played 16 times for the Toon following his move from Brighton in January. He was almost always solid and played a huge part in helping Newcastle survive.
Our signing of the season for Newcastle, however, is still Guimaraes, but Merson and a few Magpies fans could lean towards Burn as well, and we can’t really blame them after his contribution over the last few months.
