Standard Liege boss Philippe Montanier has heaped praise on Steven Gerrard and Rangers. He says, statistically, they’re one of the best teams around.

Standard Liege and Rangers will kick off their Europa League campaigns against one another tomorrow. The two sides will treat this as one of the biggest games in the group, too. They’re the two who will likely fight it out to join favourites Benfica in progressing from the group.

And Liege boss Philippe Montanier certainly thinks his side is up against it. He believes that, statistically, Rangers are among the best teams in Europe right now.

“Statistically, we will play against one of the best teams in Europe,” he said, per Walfoot. “They have scored 37 goals, conceded 4 goals and made 11 clean sheets in all competitions up to now.

“They are not developing a traditional Scottish game and Steven Gerrard does a very good job. A two-way team, they defend and attack together. Our opponent is fast, technical and moving forward. We will have to be wary of that ”

Those are strong words on any Scottish side but Rangers have certainly impressed this season. They sit at the top of the Scottish Premiership unbeaten and go into this game fresh off a 2-0 win over Celtic.

Gerrard also guided his side through a difficult Europa League group last year. They finished just one point behind FC Porto and ahead of Young Boys and Feyenoord en route to the knockout rounds.

So you can hardly blame Montanier for talking up his opponents here – Liege face a very tough task.

As for Rangers, they’ll want to keep their great momentum going with another win on Thursday. Accomplish that and they’ll already fancy their chances of progressing for a second consecutive year.
