Matt Ritchie proved to be the unlikely hero for Newcastle United as they produced a shock victory over Manchester City.

Newcastle threw a spanner into the works in the race for the title by coming from behind to topple the champions.

This would allow Liverpool to move seven points clear at the top if they beat Leicester City in tonight’s Premier League clash.

The Magpies had trailed inside the first 30 seconds when Sergio Aguero netted from close range.

At that point, it looked like it could be a long and difficult night for Rafa Benitez’s men but they stood firm and slowly got back into the game.

When Salomon Rondon brought the scores level, the crowd cheered on the Newcastle players who responded well.

And Sean Longstaff dispossessed Fernandinho in his own box before being knocked to the ground by the Brazilian.

Man City goalkeeper Ederson needed treatment before the penalty, meaning Ritchie had to hold his nerve during the delay and remain composed.

But the 29-year-old, who has been operating at left-back, stepped up and slammed his penalty past Ederson.
