Sunderland narrowed the gap to just three points behind Barnsley in the race for the second automatic promotion spot.

In last night’s League One clash, Sunderland brushed relegation-threatened Accrington Stanley aside with a comfortable 3-0 win.

This brought them to within three points of Barnsley and the Black Cats still have two games in hand.

Automatic promotion is very much in Sunderland’s hands and one man who is leading their charge is Aiden McGeady.

The veteran winger turns 33 today and celebrated his birthday in style with a goal and three points.

Fresh from scoring twice in Sunday’s Checkatrade Trophy final loss against Portsmouth, McGeady opened the scoring at Accrington.

It was the Republic of Ireland international’s 14th goal of the season, further highlighting his importance for Sunderland.

McGeady only needed four minutes to add to his goal tally for the season, scoring a stunner from 25 yards into the top corner.

Goals from Will Grigg and Kazaiah Sterling then wrapped up an easy 3-0 win to bolster the promotion bid.
