‘Best of all Premier League teams’; Darren Bent applauds Aston Villa’s work

Darren Bent has hailed Aston Villa’s work as ‘the best in the Premier League’. He believes it will comfortably get them top half this season.

Former Aston Villa striker Darren Bent clearly loves the work the club have put in this summer. So much so, in fact, that he believes no other Premier League team can top it.

“I think, honestly, Aston Villa are going to comfortably finish in the top half of the table,” he told Sportology TV. “[Dean Smith] hasn’t bought in bulk. He’s looked at every area where he’s weakest on the pitch and gone ‘bang, bang, bang’ and put the pieces in.

“I think he’s done very, very well. I think they’ve done the best out of all the Premier League teams in recruitment and bringing players to the football club.”

That’s high praise, given some of the business done in the Premier League this year. Chelsea, for one, have secured two of the world’s brightest prospects in Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. Liverpool signed Thiago, one of the best midfielders in the world.

And yet, it’s tough to disagree with Bent on this one.

It’s certainly easy to look at a 7-2 win and praise the team but that result against Liverpool really showed off how good the recruitment was. The Villa side looked complete, without an obvious weak link at all.

More importantly, the signings appeared to blend together wonderfully. Emilio Martinez played very well in goal (6 saves, 2 claims), Matt Cash slots in effortlessly on the right. Ollie Watkins is clearly a goal threat and capable of leading the line. And, more importantly than anything, Jack Grealish and Ross Barkley can play together.

To see all of that come to light just four games in is remarkable. While other sides may have brought bigger names and spent more cash, no one else put a team together this well.
