Best in the league but Everton have taken Gylfi Sigurdsson off corner duties

Everton are now three games without a win after a disappointing display against Watford at Goodison Park last night. It took a late free-kick from Lucas Digne to give Everton a share of the spoils. That, however, papered over the cracks of the team and the Frenchman’s own performance.

Digne had a shocker defensively against Watford, just as he did in their only Premier League home defeat against West Ham.

However, it was not just that aspect of his game that disappointed. The question needs to be asked. Why is Gylfi Sigurdsson not taking corners?

The Icelandic international did not have his best game every last night either. His penalty was saved by Ben Foster.

But Digne’s corners rarely beat the first man and had Everton fans groaning. When he did not take one, Ademola Lookman did instead. Sigurdsson, it seems, has been taken off duties.

Everton fills the opposing box with the likes of Michael Keane, Yerry Mina, Richarlison and Andre Gomes, all big threats in the box. Yet, arguably one of the best crossers of the ball in the Premier League is not taking the corners.

Everton paid £45 million for Sigurdsson last summer and his ability from set-pieces was one of the main reasons why. In his final season at Swansea, he created 38 chances from corner kicks, the highest number in the Premier League, as reported by Sky Sports.

Get him back on corners and see if Mina can repeat some of his World Cup heroics.
