'Best footballer I’ve ever played with': Eric Dier raves about player Pochettino sold at Tottenham in 2019
Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier has named Mousa Dembele as the best footballer he has ever played with.
The Belgian spent six-and-a-half years at Spurs and he was brilliant when he was fit. He played 249 games for Tottenham, scored 10 goals, provided 12 assists and is adored by Tottenham fans even to this day.
Injuries were really cruel on Dembele during his time in North London. He missed over 160 days of action due to fitness issues and that, sadly, didn’t allow him to fulfil his potential.
However, all of his teammates who saw him in training every day know just how good he was. Dier is one of them and the Englishman has labelled Dembele as the best player he has ever played with.

Eric Dier: Mousa Dembele is the best footballer I’ve ever played with
Dier said on The High Performance podcast: “Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen, who were at Tottenham and older than me, I recognised those were the guys that I want to be with and I like the way they lead their lives outside of football. They really had that where nothing affected them. They were extremely humble.
“Mousa Dembele was the best footballer I’ve ever played with.
“They were like two older brothers to me, they really looked after me and I took a lot of advice from them. They were two people that I looked up to and became very close to.”
Dier has played with the likes of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Hugo Lloris and Son Heung-min, but for him to name Dembele as the best player he has played with says a lot about the Belgian’s quality.
Consistent injury issues forced Mauricio Pochettino to let Dembele leave in January 2019. The now 34-year-old plays his football in China for Guangzhou City, but he is very fondly remembered by everyone at Tottenham.
One of Spurs fans’ biggest criticism since Dembele left is the fact that he hasn’t been replaced. There are not many players like him in world football who can provide an incredible balance between attack and defence.
A fully fit Dembele would walk into Tottenham’s team now and he’d be an incredible fit in Antonio Conte’s system. Sadly for Dier and Spurs fans, that’ll not happen.
