Everton winger Bernard has revealed he had contact with Palmeiras before choosing to sign for the Toffees.

The 27-year-old is now into his second season on Merseyside, and appears to have finally settled in English football.

The Brazilian joined Everton as a free agent after running down his contract at Shakhtar Donetsk, but has now revealed he did have contact with Palmeiras back in his homeland of Brazil.

In an interview with ESPN Brazil, he said: “I had many conversations with Alexandre Mattos [Palmeiras sporting director]. Of course there was the interest, we talked. But I opted for Everton precisely for that.

“I was 25 to 26 years old. I still had some fat to burn here in Europe. I wanted to show that I’m capable, too. If I’m here, it’s no wonder.

“The club know what I could give here to the team, what I can do, especially related to their planning. So I was happy for their interest, but I was happy with my choice to be here at Everton.”

TBR’s view – Bernard can become key for Everton

He’s got a full season under his belt, and it is clear this season that he is much more comfortable in the Premier League.

Bernard can become a key player for the Toffees this season, as he has the creative talents to help Marco Silva’s team become more cutting in front of goal.

Certainly the expectations are higher for the trickster in his second season, but it’s been a good start so far.
