Benteke explains the two reasons he stayed at Crystal Palace this summer
Christian Benteke has spoken about two reasons why he decided to stay at Crystal Palace for this season.
After the end of the last campaign, the £120k-per-week Belgian’s contract was due to expire in June.
Speculation arose about his future, with Fanatik claiming the 30-year-old would join Fenerbahce.
However, he stayed at Selhurst Park after signing a new two-year contract.
Benteke enjoyed a brilliant end to last season, scoring seven goals in 13 Premier League games.
Speaking to Sport/Voetbalmagazine, the ace claims he never had any interest in leaving the South London outfit.
When talking about the Eagles, Benteke said: “I have always felt the confidence of the club and I had no interest in leaving the club at all costs. I decided to fight back and keep working hard. And I’m glad it paid off. My first argument, separate from the conversation I had with the chairman, was my physical readiness.
“I also wanted to stay here for family reasons, as my children have been attending school in London for a few years now.”
Crystal Palace will be hoping Edouard can displace Benteke
Inconsistency has ravaged Benteke during his time with Crystal Palace. As a result, the club will be hoping Odsonne Edouard can displace him.
As far as non-goal-scoring centre-forwards go, Benteke is up there with the best of them.
He is a massive presence in the final third and will bully most defenders in the top flight. But, as has always been the case, he will not score many goals.
You would imagine the only reason for his contract extension was due to the struggles of Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Frenchman has failed to hit the ground running during his time in South London.
Therefore, any new arrival at number nine (Edouard in this case), would need a capable backup. Benteke is the perfect player to come off the bench in games if need be.
