Bent claims Chelsea can close gap to Manchester City with Lukaku transfer
Darren Bent has claimed Chelsea will close the gap on Manchester City with the transfer of Romelu Lukaku.
What’s the story?
According to the latest reports, the Blues are about to make a new bid worth £130m in a cash-plus-player deal for the Inter Milan striker.
The club’s opening offer for the £200k-p/w Belgium international was rejected by the Serie A champions. Chelsea offered £85m plus Marcos Alonso for the 28-year-old.
And speaking to talkSPORT, Bent believes the Blues will be in a great position if they re-signed their former player.
When talking about Lukaku and Manchester City, Bent said: “I think if Chelsea were to sign Lukaku, and even if Manchester City get one of them [Jack Grealish/Harry Kane], Chelsea will close the distance.”
“We’ve already seen them beat them in the Champions League, you have to say quite comfortably. Last season, Chelsea lost out on games/points because of missed chances in key moments. If you get someone like Lukaku, that quality, he will score goals.”
Chelsea only Lukaku away from ousting City
Chelsea are only the transfer of the ace away from ousting City next season.
Thomas Tuchel’s showed last season they can compete with Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut of a side.
The three victories towards the end of last season were more than flukes as the German got the best of his Spanish counterpart.
Tuchel’s tactical nous, especially at the back, makes him City’s biggest threat in their quest for a sixth Premier League title.
Finishing was the biggest issue last season with Jorginho ending the campaign as the club’s top scorer (seven).
And with Timo Werner proving far from reliable, a new centre-forward is extremely key this summer.
The Belgian can help Chelsea in their quest to oust City next season, especially under Tuchel.
