Tottenham Hotspur’s dreams of winning the Champions League trophy were dashed by Liverpool on Saturday, but the north Londoners were still praised by Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Roman Pavluychenko on social media.
A controversial penalty was scored by Mo Salah inside two minutes, before Divock Origi scored late on as Tottenham pushed to level the score. Reds goalkeeper Alisson made a number of solid saves, keeping out Lucas Moura.
It saw the Reds hold aloft their sixth Champions League trophy, while Spurs suffered defeat in their first ever appearance in the final. But Mauricio Pochettino’s side performed admirably, keeping possession well.
Indeed, the north Londoners deserve enormous praise for reaching the final – something which surpassed expectation quite considerably. Indeed, former stars Assou-Ekotto and Pavluychenko applauded their old side.
so sad for them 😩 but proud of them in same time #coys thanks for all👊🏾

Spurs deserve all the plaudits for the fight and character they showed for reaching the final, and then impressing against one of the best sides in Europe in a match where they were somewhat unfortunate to lose.
Keeping Pochettino is the key for Spurs, now. Christian Eriksen could leave, as could Toby Alderweireld. Bringing in some top-class replacements and forging a side capable of doing the same is pivotal.
Spurs must use the togetherness of their squad and go one better next season – that being a proper title challenge and another successful campaign in the Champions League.
