Man City held aloft a fourth consecutive Carabao Cup on Sunday afternoon at Wembley in front of a handful of fans after a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur – and Benjamin Mendy has teased City teenager Cole Palmer on Instagram.

It promised an intriguing encounter between the two sides, as interim Spurs manager Ryan Mason took charge of his second match – after replacing Jose Mourinho a week ago. Guardiola is renowned as one of the best in the world.

Despite comments from Mason before the match that suggested Spurs would play in a more attacking style, similar to that of Mauricio Pochettino rather than Mourinho – Spurs reverted to a more Mourinho-like approach on Sunday.

Eventually, City took advantage as defender Aymeric Laporte – who probably would not have been playing had John Stones not been sent off against Aston Villa last time out – scored the only goal of the game for Guardiola’s men.

Mendy was an unused substitute during the win, while 18-year-old Palmer – who has played twice at senior level under Guardiola for City – was in the squad but not named on the bench. The Frenchman took to Instagram.

He posted a photo alongside the six-time England Under-18 international, teasing him that “tomorrow is school”.
