Benitez would surely frustrate Newcastle fans further with move for Francesco Vicari
Rafa Benitez could be set to frustrate the Newcastle United fans further – by targeting another defender in January.
The Spaniard is reported by Calciomercato to be coveting SPAL defender Francesco Vicari, a 24-year-old Italian centre-half.
Apparently Benitez has sent scouts to watch him in action, and he’s been doing well for his club – SPAL lie 13th in Serie A and have won four games so far.
A few weeks ago Sport Mediaset also reported on the Magpies interest in Vicari, meaning that there could well be legs to this link.
If Newcastle are still struggling to score goals come January and this man is unveiled as a new signing, then fans are sure to be frustrated.
Newcastle need firepower not reinforcements at back
Newcastle have been utterly toothless in attack this season.
They may be rock bottom of the Premier League, but their defensive record is actually not the worst in the division.
In their nine league matches so far they have conceded 14 goals – Manchester United, Leicester City, Burnley, Cardiff City, Fulham, Huddersfield Town have all let in more.
Newcastle have been losing games, but they haven’t been getting swept aside.
It really does signal that Newcastle need to find a new means of scoring goals, rather than try to improve something that isn’t badly broken.
Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar were both signed in the summer and Benitez has used the latter only sparingly.
The Magpies have been managing well enough in defence – they simply need to focus on improving in front of goal.
