Ben White admits he's had to keep his Arsenal move under wraps for weeks now
New Arsenal signing Ben White has admitted that he’s had to work hard to keep his move to north London under wraps in recent weeks.
The Gunners finally completed the signing of White this afternoon. The England defender signed a long-term deal with the club, and Arsenal will pay around £50m for his services.
It brings an end to one of the most protracted transfer sagas of the summer so far. White was first linked around a month ago, but Edu, Mikel Arteta, and White himself have had to be patient.
And speaking in his first interview as a Gunner today, White admitted that it’s been a hard one to keep under wraps.
“Yeah, it’s been hard not to tell anyone to be fair. I told my family to keep it quiet,” White said.
“Even when I was on holiday I was getting asked if was or not (joining Arsenal). It was tough, but I managed to keep it quiet.”
White has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the Premier League since enjoying a superb loan spell with Leeds two seasons back. His campaign was capped by being included in the England squad for Euro 2020.
Arsenal finally get Ben White and he’ll be worth the wait
While there is some uncertainty around the fact Arsenal have paid such a big fee for the England man, White’s talent cannot be questioned.
He’s also very versatile, young, and more than experienced in the Premier League already. The same cannot be said for William Saliba, which is why the Gunners have probably gone for someone who can slot straight in.
The time, then, is now for White. He has to hit the ground running and while he’ll try to ignore the price tag, it will add pressure. But he should deal with that pressure, and prove a fine signing in the long-term.
