Arsenal defender Ben White was lucky to get away with not giving a penalty away for the Gunners yesterday after his late tackle on Spurs striker, Harry Kane.

White appeared to catch Kane right on the edge of the area but no foul was given on the field. VAR did check the call, but didn’t choose to intervene and the Gunners went on to win the game comfortable.

But speaking to Sky Sports earlier today, former PL referee, Dermot Gallagher, believes that White got away with one for his tackle on Kane.

“I think he’s lucky. I think he doesn’t get the ball. Kane gets there quickly and he catches him. I wouldn’t have been surprised if they’d given a penalty there,” Gallagher said.

“The VAR thought it didn’t mean the ‘clear and obvious’ error. But I think it’s a tough one for the VAR, because I think if the referee gives a penalty I don’t think he’d go against him either.”

Other than that slight mishap, White had a fine game at the heart of the Arsenal defence. In front of Aaron Ramsdale and alongside Gabriel, the Gunners newcomer looked every bit the £50m player.

TBR’s View: White rides his luck with Kane tackle

Gallagher is right here. If the referee gives it in the first place, then the VAR will not be overturning it either.

It really should have been given. But sometimes you ride your luck in football in big moments and this is what Ben White appeared to do here.

For Spurs, it was just another kick in the you know where on what was a miserable day overall for the club.
