Ben Parker has told the LS11 podcast that he believes that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips deserves a call-up into the England squad, with the former Whites defender suggesting that few can perform better in his role.
Phillips has been outstanding under Marcelo Bielsa. Bielsa quickly moved the 23-year-old into the holding role. And that move has seen Phillips become arguably the most important player in the Leeds boss’ system.
The Sun recently reported that four Premier League sides wanted Phillips this past summer, and Manchester United are now preparing a move for the end of the season.
And with England preparing for their latest Euro 2020 qualifiers over the coming days, Parker insisted that Phillips can be as good as any other midfielder Gareth Southgate has included in his latest squad while discussing whether the youngster deserves an England chance.
“If we’re talking England midfielders, there’s no real standout names when you go through the squad. It’s not like years gone by, when you’ve got the likes of Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, players playing for top, top clubs, winning trophies all over Europe,” he told Ls11.
“I fully agree with you. The role he does, I don’t see many better. The times you watch Match of the Day or see a game on Super Sunday or whatever, you just think Kalvin can do that. But he does it better. His overall game is so mature as well. He’s a beast, just smashes people out the way.
“I thought last year he was fantastic, but he seems to have gone up another notch this season.”
TBR View – Leeds fans should not mind Phillips being overlooked
While some Leeds fans may insist that Phillips deserves a chance, it is probably good news for the Whites that he has been overlooked.
Leeds will be pleased that Phillips has a chance to rest in this break. He is arguably the player that Bielsa would find most difficult to replace if he did sustain an injury.
And of course, Leeds’s task of keeping Phillips will only be made tougher if he plays for England and impresses. So the club themselves may not mind seeing Phillips wait for his international chance – even if they feel that he deserves one.
