Ben Parker has made a big claim to the LS11 Podcast regarding Helder Costa’s performance during Leeds United’s win over Middlesbrough at the weekend.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side dismantled Boro at Elland Road. Two goals in each half helped the Whites to a 4-0 victory that has left Leeds five points clear of the chasing pack in the Championship.
It was a game that was full of notable goals. It was the first game this season in which a Leeds player has scored in the first 20 minutes. And Mateusz Klich’s stunner came from a corner, which have really not been Leeds’s friend this term.
But it was also a game which saw Costa score his first league goal for Leeds. The winger has taken some time to really get going since his summer move from Wolves. But he has clearly improved as the weeks have gone on.
And former Leeds defender Parker insisted that he has been hugely impressed with Costa’s form and attitude in recent weeks. And he suggested that his upturn in form culminated in his best performance yet for Bielsa’s men.
“I thought he was unlucky not to start at Luton. That’s when after the international break, Pablo came back from an injury and he started instead of Costa,” he told the LS11 Podcast. “But I think his reaction has been superb. What you expect and what you hoped from a player like that.
“He came on against Luton, injected a bit of pace and tempo into the last 15, 20. When he came on at Reading, he obviously provided the assist. And again, he started on Saturday and I thought that was his best game in a Leeds shirt.”
It will be a huge boost for Leeds if Costa has indeed turned a corner. He is a potential game-changer who has the quality to produce a moment of brilliance from nothing.
Leeds arguably found themselves relying on Pablo Hernandez too much during the latter stages of last season. But it does not appear that that is going to happen this time around.
Costa appears to be getting better and better with each appearance. Meanwhile, Jack Harrison has been outstanding on the other flank. It is probably not a huge surprise that Patrick Bamford is back scoring regularly with the players behind him in such brilliant form.
