Ben Parker has praised Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier for the way he’s stepped up when called upon recently at Elland Road.
The 20-year-old has watched on fro the bench for most of the season as the understudy to Kiko Csailla, with his only opportunity coming when he impressed in the FA Cup defeat away to Arsenal.
But the French shot-stopper has played back-to-back matches in the Championship while Casilla serves an eight-game ban for racial abuse and he’s getting a run in the Whites XI.
Meslier is currently on a season-long loan at Elland Road from French second-tier club Lorient, with the Mirror reporting that Leeds are prepared to activate a buy-out clause in his contract
The 6ft 6in colossus is an extremely imposing figure in net for Leeds that commands his box well and is comfortable in playing out from the back.
He’s kept two clean sheets in his two league matches so far against Hull City and Huddersfield Town, with Cardiff City next up for him on Sunday.
“The confidence amongst the back four, the keeper Meslier has come in as well, has been absolutely superb,” Parker told LUTV.
Meslier has looked the part so far during his brief time on the pitch for Leeds, especially when he caught the attention of supporters in the FA Cup.
He’s had the perfect introduction to Championship football so far and in fairness he couldn’t have asked for a better start, with back-to-back clean sheets and not too much pressure put on his goal in either match.
There are surely going to be much sterner tests ahead, but it must give a goalkeeper such big confidence when he’s got such a settled backline in front of him who look formidable in the Championship.
