Ben Parker has told LS11 that while he believes Stuart Dallas has been outstanding this season, he would name Kalvin Phillips as Leeds United’s Player of the Season because of his importance to Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
The Whites currently sit at the top of the Championship. And, perhaps more crucially, they are seven points clear of the play-off places with nine games remaining.
Unsurprisingly, the current stoppage in the season has created a lot of uncertainty. But it has also allowed clubs, fans and pundits to take stock of what has happened so far this term.
And one of the talking points that may require a lot of debate surrounds who Leeds’s Player of the Season may be. There have arguably been a number of candidates.
Former Whites man Parker admitted that Dallas is unquestionably a contender. But he suggested that he would vote for one of his teammates.
“I think he’s been absolutely fantastic, Stuart Dallas. But when I was a player, whenever I voted for my player of the season, I always voted for the player in general, if you took him out of the team, who would you miss most,” he told LS11. “And for me, Kalvin Phillips. He’s the best player in the Championship. He’s got to be the best player in your team for that.”
Phillips appears to have taken his game to another gear more recently. Since his red card against Queens Park Rangers, the midfielder has looked like a player with a point to prove.
And without him, Leeds have struggled to look like the same side.
But there is no question that the likes of Dallas, Jack Harrison, Ben White and Luke Ayling should all come into contention.
It is remarkable to think that it was just two years ago when Pablo Hernandez seemed like the only player who seemed deserving of the same award.
