Ben Parker has praised the quality of Leeds United defender Gaetano Berardi, who he believes is such a good option to have in the squad.
The 31-year-old fan favourite is not a regular in Marcelo Bielsa’s side, but has stepped up whenever called upon this season and is a no-nonsense centre-back.
He made his first league appearance of 2020 in midweek during the 1-0 away win against Middlesbrough, which kept the Whites second in the Championship table and five points above third-placed Fulham.
Berardi has managed 19 appearances across all competition this campaign for the Yorkshire club, with 16 games coming in the Championship.
The Swiss enforcer has a staggering record of 12 victories, three draws and just one defeat during his league appearances.
Parker believes that Berardi has been a valuable player for Leeds this campaign despite not being involved in the best XI.
“Every time he’s played for us this season he’s been absolutely superb,” Parker told LUTV.
“I think points per game over five games played for a player this season he’s got the biggest points per game ratio. It shows his value to the squad when he comes in, never lets anybody down.”
Berardi isn’t a part of the core Leeds group that regularly starts most games and it’s been a fairly settled XI in the past couple of months.
But injuries and suspensions are inevitable over a long gruelling Championship season, which is why it’s so important to have adequate replacements on standby.
Berardi slotted in like he had never been away against Boro and he’s an aggressive defender that could do a job during any of the remaining league games if required.
