Newcastle United have held a long-term interest in Nottingham Forest midfielder Ben Osborn.
According to various reports, Newcastle were considering a move for Osborn this summer.
But signing the 24-year-old would not have lifted them out of the trouble that they find themselves in.
After 10 Premier League games, Newcastle sit second bottom in the Premier League and are yet to pick up a win.
The Magpies have scored just six goals in 10 matches and have picked up three points.
Osborn’s presence in the squad would not have changed much for Newcastle. In fact, it is hard to see where he would fit in.
The Nottingham Forest academy product operates at left-back or anywhere across the midfield.
But he has drawn criticism for his poor performances this season and has failed to nail down a regular starting spot for the Reds.
With Osborn struggling for starts in the Championship, it is clear that he is not good enough to be Newcastle’s saviour this season.
Although he offers versatility and he is still quite young, he is not the immediate fix that Newcastle need.
If Rafa Benitez is backed with funds in the January window, it would be a mistake to invest in Osborn at this moment in time.
