Ben Godfrey has claimed he believes he’s quicker than Everton teammate Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Godfrey, 23, is enjoying a brilliant first year at Goodison Park as a Toffees player, and has become a nailed-on starter under manager Carlo Ancelotti.

The centre-back has shown he’s got the versatility to play anywhere across the defence if needed, with his pace and physicality a big part of his game.

He reckons he’s got the edge over centre-forward Calvert-Lewin when it comes to speed.

24-year-old frontman Calvert-Lewin is electric off a standing start, albeit a lot of people always look towards him for his aerial ability and hold up play.

“I’d back myself [in a race], but I’m not smoking him. Smoking him is a bit rude, but I’m winning,” Godfrey said.

TBR’s View:

Calvert-Lewin’s pace is definitely underrated.

The England striker has the all-around game that makes him so effective on the pitch, and the way he runs the channels is a nightmare for defenders.

He’s scored 21 goals in 35 games across all competitions this season, with 16 coming in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Godfrey’s raw pace stands out immediately, especially for a defender.

His powers of recovery at the back are so crucial in nullifying opponents, and it’s a great trait for any modern defender to have.

It would be a good 100m sprint race, but Godfrey would win it by a fine margin.
