In the summer there was plenty of interest in the services of Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson. He had impressed in his one Premier League season with Boro before having a great season in the Championship at the Riverside.
One team who were said to be very keen on his potential signature was Everton. The Toffees needed to bring in new centre-back recruits and Gibson soon emerged as a potential target. As reported by the Liverpool Echo, the Boro man was being considered as an option if Everton ran into trouble in their pursuit of Barcelona defender Yerry Mina.
In the end, Everton did get Mina and Gibson ended up heading to Burnley. As reported by the BBC the Clarets splashed out £15 million to get their man.

Now, Everton have hardly thrived at centre-back this season. But Gibson has certainly not proven himself to be a big transfer miss.
The 26-year-old has played just five times for the club this season. His one Premier League appearance saw him score against Everton. However, the Clarets lost that game 5-1.
A hernia injury has not helped matters but it was no surprise that, according to Sky Sports, Aston Villa made a cheeky approach to loan the player toward the end of the transfer window.
Everton have struggled at the back this season. But Gibson has not proven he would have been a better option.
