‘Bellerin puts forward his case’ – Three things learnt from Arsenal 1-0 Leicester

Last-gasp Arsenal keep slim European hopes alive

Despite offering very little in the attacking third all evening, Arsenal just about kept alive their slim hopes of Champions League qualification next season through Robert Huth’s own goal.

There’s no two ways about it, Arsene Wenger’s side scarcely deserved their win despite dominating the play all evening; Leicester were resilient, focused and offered the hosts very little in terms of clear opportunities in front of goal, and the manner in which their defeat came will be hard to take.

Alexis Sanchez struggled in a central striking role up against the strength and size of Huth and Yohan Benalouane, whilst Theo Walcott may not have even had a touch inside the penalty area all night.

The game was crying out for Olivier Giroud to start – Hector Bellerin had a fruitful night down the right-hand side and stood in some cross that a target man would have made a lot more of.

The performance may disappoint Wenger but at the business end of the season it’s all about result, and with one – or both – Manchester sides dropping points tomorrow, don’t count the Gunners out.
