Arsenal defender Calum Chambers will surely fancy his chances of starting in the Gunners’ Premier League opener this Friday.

The 26-year-old joined Arsenal from Southampton in 2016, making the move for a reported £16million.

Chambers has made 117 competitive appearances for the club, but has sadly been a peripheral figure in recent years.

He missed out on the whole of 2020 due to a cruciate ligament injury, which came just as he was getting his Gunners career back on track.

Chambers was linked with a move last January, but he finished the 2020-21 campaign strongly and with plenty of minutes.

The former Saints man featured plentifully at right-back at the tail end of last season, and was arguably an upgrade on Hector Bellerin.

Chambers has offered plenty down the right flank, including great crossing ability, technical skill, and good link-up play with Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe ahead of him.

In Arsenal’s 4-1 friendly win over Millwall on July 24, Chambers grabbed a goal and an assist.

He also showed his versatility by moving to centre-back after Pablo Mari went off.

And fans loved Chambers’ contributions on the day, with one fan even calling his cross for Alexandre Lacazette “Beckham-esque”.

Although Chambers is a centre-back by trade, he could well be Mikel Arteta’s solution at right-back – for the time being at least.

And with Brentford hosting Arsenal on Friday evening, the £50,000-a-week ace is a great shout to make the starting XI.
