West Ham United have officially confirmed the signing of Goncalo Cardoso. The 18-year-old Portuguese defender has arrived at the London Stadium from Boavista.
The teenage centre-back featured fairly regularly for the Portuguese outfit last season. Cardoso racked up 18 first team appearances in all competitions. Fifteen of those outings came in the league.
Cardoso regularly impressed with his defensive discipline and maturity. He still has a long way to go before reaching his full potential, but the early signs are good and the talent is obvious.
It remains to be seen how much first team action he’ll get at the London Stadium this season. The Hammers have a settled centre-back partnership of Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena. However, Manuel Pellegrini clearly believes in Cardoso, so the youngster may well be expected to compete with the likes of Angelo Ogbonna and Winston Reid as a back up option for the aforementioned first choice pair.
In any case, time is on Cardoso’s side. Even if he doesn’t feature regularly this season for the Irons, his time will surely come. What’s more, his arrival is another sign that West Ham are showing serious long-term ambition. The Portugal under-19 international is their fifth signing of the summer, and very much one that was made with the future in mind.
Plenty of West Ham fans took to Twitter following the announcement of Cardoso’s arrival to react to the news.

The exact content I like to see. An 18 year old, 6ft 2 central defender and Portuguese international scouted from Boavista. Beautiful.
