Beating Tottenham Hotspur to Boubakary Soumare would signal Newcastle’s future intent to challenge for Europe

Newcastle United failed with a late January attempt to sign Boubakary Soumare from Lille, according to a report from le 10 Sport at the time.

And now Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race for Soumare. Foot Mercato reports that Spurs and Juventus were impressed after scouting Soumare in action recently.

The France under-20 international has not started a Ligue 1 game for Lille yet but has come off the bench 11 times and is highly rated by his club.

At such a young age, Soumare is already showing that he has the full package to be a complete central midfielder. Soumare has even attracted comparisons with Paul Pogba to highlight just how much of a prospect he is.

If Newcastle can land the 20-year-old in the summer, it would be a real statement of intent as they look to the long-term future.

Rafa Benitez’s project will finally start taking shape if he is backed with investment and Soumare would be a shrewd long-term purchase.

Newcastle are currently in a transition period. Having secured Premier League safety two years running, they are now consolidating as a mid-table Premier League side.

With continued investment, Newcastle could build a team around Soumare and Miguel Almiron as they aim to compete for Europe in the coming years.
