Beating Manchester United to Monchi would give Arsenal’s summer plans big boost

Arsenal are among the leading contenders if Roma sporting director Monchi leaves the Italian club at the end of the season, according to the Evening Standard.

They report that the Serie A outfit are becoming increasingly resigned to losing the transfer guru during the summer.

Arsenal are reportedly currently searching for a new sporting director and Monchi worked together with Unai Emery during their time together at Sevilla.

But the Gunners are not the only club credited with an interest in Monchi. Earlier this month, Calcio Mercato reported that Manchester United are ready to battle for his signature in the summer as they look to kick their post-Jose Mourinho behind the scenes transformation into gear.

With both the historic rivals entering summers where they are desperate to get it right, Arsenal beating United to Monchi could be the signature that helps them do that.

The role of the sporting director is so important in getting recruitment right these days and the arrival of someone Emery has worked alongside so successfully before could help the Gunners get in the players they need to make themselves a force again.

Getting the right quality through the door will be so important for the Gunners this summer. If they can get Monchi in – and early – it may lay the groundwork for a window where they recruit as shrewdly as they need to.
