‘Be selfish’: Manager has message for on-loan Everton man, tells him to follow in Raheem Sterling’s footsteps

Everton’s forwards haven’t had the easiest start to the season.

Frank Lampard has had to deal with sales, loans, injuries and bedding in new signings.

Speaking to The Northern Echo, Tony Mowbray has delivered a message to Everton loanee Ellis Simms.

Lampard may wish he still had Simms available to him at Goodison Park this season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been unavailable all season, Richarlison is now at Tottenham, and Salomon Rondon is out of favour.

The Toffees have now signed Neal Maupay who made his debut last weekend.

The 21-year-old has outscored all of Lampard’s current Everton players in his time at Sunderland.

And Mowbray has given a message to Simms after an injury to Scottish forward Ross Stewart.

Simms will now have to take up more responsibility to score goals after Stewart was ruled out for at least six weeks.

Mowbray has message for Simms

New Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray believes that Simms could become a 30 goal-a-season striker.

Mowbray believes Simms might be trying to work too hard, and should concentrate on finding positions to score from.

“I think Ellis will rise to the challenge,” Mowbray said.

“As long as he does not put too much of a burden on himself. That’s why the rest have to step up as well.

“I think for Ellis; the biggest challenge is to play between the sticks when the chances are created.

“I would never tell him not to work hard, but sometimes strikers who work too hard taking themselves away from the goal and chasing down channels.

“That is my message to him really. Be a bit more selfish, between the sticks.

“You have to work hard, and I am sure he will because it is in his nature, but be selfish enough to get in between the posts and finish the chances off.

“How did (Pep) Guardiola change (Raheem) Sterling from a five, six or seven goals per season player into a 25-30 goal-a-season striker?

“I don’t think he was teaching him anything about where he put his feet, it was about where he had to be.”

Mowbray will be hoping his message to Simms sinks in ahead of Sunderland’s next fixture.
